Muddy Church at St Mary’s
We hold Muddy Church in the churchyard at 10:30am on the third Sunday of every month. It is a children’s church service, where families can come together to wander and wonder in God’s creation!
At Muddy Church we love to do natural outside activities and crafts in the churchyard in individual family pods. We all come together around a prayer tree area, seated on log stumps, to listen to stories, learn about God, join in with action songs and pray together. It is a wonderful way to experience church in these unusual times.
In October, we focussed on Harvest and the stewardship of creation. We created bird feeders to hang from our pods, planted crocuses to look forward to in the springtime and learnt about the parable of the mustard seed. It was wonderful to see families coming together once again in a safe and fun way.
In November, we thought about Seeing God and exploring the ways in which we can see God in nature and in the world around us. Once again we were in our pods, which are being personalised to each individual family with bunting and bird feeders. We painted our ideas of God with mud paint which we created ourselves. After listening to the story of Jesus healing a blind man, we then created binoculars and natural viewfinders and looked around at where we could see God- everywhere!
In December, we thought about the Greatest Gift. We all unwrapped our gift from God, baby Jesus. We made crowns to remember that Jesus is the King, and yet came to earth as a baby in a stable. After hearing the story of the first Christmas, we made our own stables for Jesus and stars to guide the way to Him.
The children are thoroughly enjoying spending time doing these messy activities with their families and seeing their friends (albeit from a distance!). As the name suggests, Muddy Church takes places in all weathers. Wet coats and wellies are very welcome! Our new addition of hot chocolate has been very warm and pleasing! Please do bring a reusable cup to use.
We are so thankful to God for this opportunity to come together in the churchyard. All are welcome to join us on our Muddy Church adventure. We ask you to book your family’s space in advance so that we can prepare your pod for you.
Please do get in touch with Anna and Katy at email@example.com to book your place and for more details.
